how it began

At some point while living in London then Berlin, I got homesick… so I started cooking… I think after around ten years of being away the pull back hit hard. First, I fought it with spices and smells and flavours that soothed me through triggering memories I had of my childhood in family homes in Durban and Cape Town. Safe and loved. Through beans bunny chows, pap, bhajia, bobotie, potjiekos, vada, carrot sambal, sweetmeats, milk tart, malva pudding, lamingtons, chocolate… My vegan pop up restaurant Chakalaka was born out a need to heal myself. Feeding others with foods from my happiest moments in life fed me… And still feeds me…

In my head, this idea of home is not geographic… It’s made of smells and flavours and the company of people who speak my language, not English necessarily, but the possession of a kind of humour, banter, openness and a love of debate that I’ve experienced with people sometimes from the most unexpected and far-flung places…
